Perfect for the Game of Thrones fan! – MCM “Fire and Ice.” One set of 8 or two sets of 4.
What: Rare set of 8 mid-century modern Georges Briard glasses in their “Gold Flame” pattern. I believe these are some of his earlier work and very hard to find, especially in rocks size. These straight sided oversized rocks glasses has applied 22K gold and silver flames over a greek key and diamond band. The 22K gold has raised 3-D accents within the flames and triangles in the band. Each has the raised Briard signature in the band as well.
Georges Briard (1917 – 2005) was born Jakub Brojdo in Poland, he moved to Chicago in 1937 and studied at the Art Institute of Chicago. He served in World War II as an Army interpreter fluent in several languages on Gen. George S. Patton’s staff. In 1947, he was discharged from the Army and started working in New York with Max Wille, who came up with the name Georges Briard to mark commercial pieces. He won many design awards in his lifetime.
When: Briard was a popular and prolific designer from the late 1940s – 1970s. He used applied 22K gold much like Culver but also had many non metallic designs. He is known for his geometric forms.
Where: Produced in NY, USA and sold only in high end department stores of the era.
Size: approx. 3.2″ h x 3.25″ w, holds 8 oz.
Condition*: Good used condition. The gold is very brilliant and intact but probably 25% of the silver has flaked (see photos.) My guess is that at some point someone put them through the dishwasher, which you should never do with glassware of this type and vintage. One glass appears to have a 1/4″ crack at the rim but I am not sure it is a crack, it might be an inclusion in the glass as I cannot feel it with my fingernail and the glass does not sound cracked. It is nothing that would stop me from using and enjoying them. I have reflected these issues in the price.
